Turn the tool-flag hat into a real business

A plan for Patriot Pro's Apparel. From Steve Vo, Rise Local.

The tool-flag design is the good part. It says "I build things" in a way a plain flag patch doesn't. Here's what's holding the store back, and where the money in hats actually is.

1. What's holding the store back

Jacksonville customers looking for your kind of hat get sent out of town. When I searched "custom leather patch hats" in Google Maps around Jacksonville, it showed shops in Raleigh, Pensacola, Daytona and St. Augustine. Of the local embroidery and print shops I checked, none markets leather patch hats. No Jacksonville shop I found owns that search.

Check it yourself: search "custom leather patch hats" on your phone.

Google would likely reject the store today. To list products for free in Google Shopping, a store needs a clear refund policy and contact details Google can find. Yours has no refund policy yet, and every product's brand reads "My Store." Connecting it to Google as-is risks a suspension that's hard to undo.

You're priced like the big brands without their proof. Grunt Style sells patriotic "Blue Collar" patch hats from $14.99 to $32.99. A plain flag hat loses that fight on price. Your edge is the tool flag and the trades identity, and the store doesn't say that yet. Product titles read "Richardson 112 Kryptek Typhon/ Black."

Two claims could backfire. Richardson caps are imported, so "Proudly made in the USA" isn't accurate for the hat. "Customized in Jacksonville, FL" is, and it's a better story. And your trademark application was filed in Class 40 (imprinting services), not Class 25, the class for hats.

Check it yourself: search 98217243 on the USPTO's TSDR site. It's still "awaiting examination" since 2023. (I'm not a lawyer. A trademark attorney can confirm the right filing.)

2. Where the money is: crew hats in Jacksonville

That empty search is the opening. Companies buy hats with their logo for the whole crew, online and locally, and nobody in Jacksonville is selling them leather patch hats. Crew orders are the biggest online sale a hat store can make, and you can start right at home.

642construction businesses in Duval with 10 or more employees: plumbing, HVAC, electrical, roofing and more (U.S. Census, 2023)
~$600profit on one 48-hat crew order at about $24 a hat, if your costs land where I expect. That's 40 to 50 single online sales.
$40what local shops charge for a single custom hat. You fit between that and the national bulk shops, which take 3 to 4 weeks.

You're a tradesman selling to tradesmen. You can hand a foreman a sample, deliver fast and local, and you already know the trades. That beats a website 400 miles away. (I'll set the exact turnaround once I know who makes your patches.)

Why not just run ads for single hats?

After free shipping, a single hat leaves you about $12–15. The typical cost to win a buyer with Facebook ads in apparel is around $37. Single-hat ads lose money until you have reviews, real photos and repeat buyers. Crew orders and gifts come first. Ads come later.

3. The plan

Weeks 1–2 · Make the store pass Google's review

By mid-November · The Christmas gift launch

From month 1 · Crew hats

Later · Ads, once there's proof

Once the store has reviews, real photos and a few crew orders, I test small Facebook and Instagram ads with you as the face: real job-site videos, not stock. The trades-apparel brands scaling right now use exactly that kind of creator video.

4. Investment

Care · store plan

$149 / month

Everything in section 3: the store cleanup, Google Shopping, tracking, reviews, the Christmas gift setup, the Crew Hats page and sample sheet, plus monthly upkeep and a monthly check-in. Month to month, cancel any time.

Not included: Shopify's own fee (about $29–39 a month), your domain's yearly fee, and a trademark filing if you choose to make one (USPTO fees are about $350 per mark).

My guarantee: your store passes Google's review and shows up in free Google Shopping listings within 30 days of your go-ahead, or you don't pay me until it does.

This depends on you buying the domain, giving me store access, and sending real product photos and your return terms in the first week. Google makes the final call. If it asks for something I can fix, I fix it at no charge until you're listed.

What it has to do to pay for itself: one crew order of about 48 hats earns roughly $600, if your costs land where I expect. One order every four months covers the plan.

5. What I need from you

Your part, week 1 · one thing

Hand 5 sample hats to contractors you already know and ask what they'd pay for 24 with their logo. I handle everything else on this page.

Next step

Buy patriotprosapparel.com today either way. Then reply "go" and I'll start on the store this week, so it's ready for the Christmas window.
